The Groundhog Song
(To move along with this song, stand up, jump up, shade your eyes with your hand, look around, then sit back down. Can you find your shadow?)
There is a little groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil
He lives in Pennsylvania in a hole up on a hill
He gets to sleep all winter
But knows just when it's time
To peek his head out of his hole
And see what he can find
(chorus)
Stand up, jump up, turn yourself around
Look out for your shadow
Then sit yourself back down
Stand up, jump up, turn yourself around
Look out for your shadow
Then sit yourself back down
Now sometimes it's still very cold
When it's time for him to go
He has to dig all morning
Just to get through all the snow
He peeks his little groundhog head
Into the chilly wind, and if he sees his shadow
Well he climbs back down again
(chorus)
Now if you were a groundhog like Punxsutawney Phil
You'd get to sleep all winter in your hole up on a hill
But on Groundhog's Day you'd wake up
And take a little peek, look out for your shadow
Then go right back to sleep
(chorus)
I Like To Read
(There are so many great books out there and people are writing new ones all the time! Do you have any favorite books?)
I like to read, I like to read, I like to find a good book
I like to go to the library, take a good look
At all the books right there, gonna read my share
Cause I know what I like and I can find it right there
I'm gonna check out some books, bring 'em on home
Gonna read 'em with my friends, gonna read on my own
And when I'm done I'm gonna bring 'em back
And get a few more, I like to read
That's what you've got the library for
(chorus)
I like to read, I like to read
I like to read, I like to read
Use imagination, live the story in your mind
When you open up a book you never know
What you'll find, I like to read
I think reading is cool, I ain't nobody's fool
I read more books at home than I do at school
I like books about adventure, books about fun
Books about science, how to get things done
I like books about people, music and sports
Newspapers, magazines and comic books of course
I like Batman, Spiderman, Wonderwoman too
I like to read, it's guaranteed, it's what I like to do
(chorus)
Now some of my friends they watch a lot of tv
They stare at that video constantly
They don't talk, don't move, I don't think they even blink
The tv lives their life for them, they don't even
have to think, but me I'd rather read a book
I get to read what I like, don't get the stupid commercials
and the same shows every night
I read and I imagine how the story would look
And it feels like you're there like you're part of the book
(chorus)
The Wiggling Dance
(Sometimes youve got so much energy it just feels like you could jump all day. This is a good song for when you feel like that. You can try it fast, or slow, and make up your own verses too. Oh, by the way, its ok for big people to do the Wiggling Dance too.)
Wiggle all around (everybody wiggle)
Wiggle all around (wiggle and jiggle)
Wiggle in the country (fresh air)
Wiggle downtown (in the center of town)
Wiggle all day (out in the sunshine)
Wiggle all night (under the moon)
That's the wiggling dance
Everybody wiggle to the wigglin' tune
(chorus)
Wiggle all around (everybody wiggle)
Wiggle all around (wiggle and jiggle)
Wiggle on up (up, up, up, up, up)
and wiggle on down (down, down, down, down, down)
Wiggle to the left, and wiggle to the right
That's the wiggling dance, youve got that right
Now jump up once, and turn around
Jump two times, and wiggle all around
Jump three times, and stamp
Your feet on the ground
Make a funny face and make a silly sound
(chorus)
Scarin Up Some Fun
(One of the fun things about Halloween is pretending to be scared. In this song you can pretend to sneak up on your friends, but if they tell you that they dont want to be scared its better to find someone else to play along with. OK, ready, 1,2,3...Boo!)
I wanted to scare my mother on Halloween
So I painted up my face and my hair all green
Then I snuck up behind her quietly (1,2,3...Boo!)
Scarin' up some fun on Halloween
(chorus)
Scariest children I ever have seen
Spooky and kooky and slimy green
Werewolf, goblin, vampire queen
Scarin' up some fun on Halloween
I wanted to scare my father on Halloween
So I got a scary mask from a magazine
Then I snuck up behind him quietly (1,2,3...Boo!)
Scarin' up some fun on Halloween
(chorus)
And I wanted to scare my teacher
On Halloween, so I got the scariest picture You ever have seen
Then I snuck up behind him quietly (1,2,3...Boo!)
Scarin' up some fun on Halloween
(chorus)
Then I wanted to scare myself on Halloween
So I looked in the mirror and (...Boo!)
Scarin' up some fun on Halloween
(chorus)
The Sit Down, Stand Up, Sit Down,
Stand Up, Sit Down, Stand Up,
Sit Down Song
(This is another song that you can move along to when youve got lots of jumping energy. You can make up your own verses, and you can also try to do it very fast or very slow.)
(chorus)
Everybody stand up, everybody sit down
Now stand up again and turn around
You can keep standin' up but not for long
Cause this is the sit down, stand up
Sit down, stand up sit down stand up
Sit down song
Stand up if you're five years old
Then sit back down again
Stand up if you're six or seven
Then sit back down with your friends
Stand up if you're two, three, or four
Stand up if you're eight, nine, or ten
Now everybody sit back down
And well do it once again
(chorus)
Stand up if you have a sister
Now sit back down again, stand up if you have
A brother, now sit back down with your friends
Stand up if you have a dog at home
Stand up if you have a cat, now everybody
Sit back down this time well do it fast
(chorus)
Stand up if you like music, then sit back down again
Stand up if you like sports, then sit back down with your friends
Stand up just if you feel like it, you don't even have to ask
Now everybody sit back down this time well do it very fast
(chorus)
I Read A Book Every Day
(OK, I dont really read a book every day, but if I had more time I know Id read more than I do. There are so many great books out there! If I really read 9 books every week, theres 52 weeks in a year, so that would be 468 books a year. At that rate in 100 years Id be able to read 46,800 books. My local library in Medford, Massachusetts has over 100,000 books, so it would take me over 200 years to read all the books in my library. I guess Id better get going.)
I just dropped by to say, I really like to read
I read a book every day and on Sunday
I read three, the more books I read
The more books I need, I just dropped by
To say, I read a book every day
I guess you know it's true, I really like to read
I hope you like reading too
So you can come and read with me
Two books, four books, I want more books
April, August, June and May
I read a book every day
I read a book every day of the week
I read a book every day
I spend a lot of time at the library
Books can be for school, books can be for fun
I got nine books last week, and I read every one
Big books small books short books tall books
I just dropped by to say I read a book every day
I read a book every day, every day
Horsery School
(Horsery School is the school that my friend Henry The Horse goes to. Henry has been trying to learn how to sing the ABC song, but he still gets mixed up sometimes and gets it wrong, but thats ok, when he gets bigger hell get it right. He likes Horsery School because hes learning how to read, and last week he brought home some really nice hoof paintings that he made.)
I was walkin' down the street, when much
To my alarm, I saw a funny building there
It looked like a barn, I didn't remember noticing
A building there before so I walked up the steps And I knocked on the door
The door opened up, and much to my surprise There stood a horse with big horse eyes
I reached out my hand and said "How do you do" And the horse said
"Welcome to the Horsery School"
(chorus)
Horsery School, what do you know
That's where the children of the horses go
Morgans, palominos and ponies too
Everyday they play at the Horsery School
Now the horses all sit in little horse chairs
They all have teddyhumans instead of teddybears
They have giant horse crayons, yellow, red and blue
Horse-sized legos and hoof paints too
They learn to neigh "thankyou", they learn
To neigh "please", they whinny out their numbers and their ABCs
Then they cantor, trot or gallop to the playground by the stable
Where you'll often find them peopling around
(chorus)
The Reading Train
(Theres a train that runs past my house and every town that it stops at has its own library. Can you find all the books hidden in this song?)
(chorus)
Climb onboard the reading train, climb aboard the reading train
No two stops will be the same, it's coming to your town
Every stop a different book, every stop a different book
Climb aboard and take a look, it's coming to your town
Well first we'll stop in Boston to see those ducklings in a line
And then we'll stop in Paris to say hello to Madeline
We'll stop at Sherwood Forest to look for Robin Hood
And then we'll visit Winnie The Pooh in The Hundred Acre Wood
(chorus)
We'll visit our friend Alice when we stop in Wonderland
Then it's off to Gotham City, to have lunch with Batman
We'll ride that train around the world to places near and far
And then we'll put our wolf suits on and head for Where The Wild Things Are
(chorus)
Now you don't need a ticket to ride the reading train
All you need is a book to read and you can climb Onboard again
We'll head on to the library to find a book for you
And then we'll jump back on the train when it comes passin' through
(chorus)
We'll stop to visit Corduroy in his department store
And maybe we'll see Mike Mulligan digging a hole
For the people next door, we'll take that train
Under the sea to visit Ariel
And we might even find Waldo, you can never tell
(chorus)
The Birthday Cheer
(If your name is Erica or Daniel, or Mom or Dad, happy birthday! ...and even if your names not in this song, happy birthday anyway. This is a song that you can sing for anyones birthday.)
It's Erica's birthday, yes I'm sure
She's one year older than she was before
And so much bigger than she was last year
So let's give Erica a birthday cheer
(chorus)
Let's hear it for Erica (Hooray!)
Today's her special day
Let's hear it again (Hooray!)
We hope you have a lot of fun today
It's Daniel's birthday, and I've been told
On July 21st he turns four years old
So blow out the candles and make a wish
And we'll give you another cheer like this
(chorus)
Happy birthday (happy birthday)
We wish you many more
Happy birthday (happy birthday)
That's what the birthday cheer is for
It's my mom's birthday, yes I'm sure
She's one year older than she was before
And believe it or not it's my dad's birthday too
So let's give them a birthday cheer for two
(chorus)
Let's hear it for Mom (Hooray!)
Let's hear it for Dad (Hooray!)
Let's hear it again (Hooray!)
I hope you have a lot of fun today
Never Gonna Change My Socks
(OK, Im only kidding, I did change my socks once. I think it was back in 1995.)
(chorus)
Never gonna change my socks,
Never gonna change my socks,
Take them home in a lead-lined box
Never gonna change my socks
Well take a look down on my feet
(Never gonna change my socks)
There's something there don't smell so sweet
(Never gonna change my socks)
I put them on a month ago
(Never gonna change my socks)
I thought I had another month to go
(Never gonna change my socks)
(chorus)
My socks were smelling really bad
The stinkiest socks I've ever had
All slimy green between my toes
A major insult to the nose
(chorus)
Now the neighbors faint when I walk by
My parents they break down and cry
The dog he wouldn't come inside
The roaches in the kitchen died
(chorus)
My socks they made the front page news
They burned a hole in both my shoes
The teacher sent me home from school
If you want I'll loan my socks to you
Learning To Read
It's all covered with fur, you can hear it purr
It's a c-a-t, cat
It's made out of wood, to hit a baseball good
You use a b-a-t, bat
When you walk in the park, you can hear him bark
He's a d-o-g, dog
Youll see her hoppin' by the stream
Slippery and green
She's an f-r-o-g, frog
(chorus)
Yes indeed, we're learning to read
It's e-a-s-y, easy
You just sound out the word
The way that it's heard
And you can r-e-a-d, read with me
It's big and it's round, you can bounce it up and down
It's a b-a-l-l, ball
You can pretend it's your baby, dress it up and maybe
It's a d-o-l-l, doll
You can take it into town, and drive it all around
It's a c-a-r, car
In the sky at night youll see it twinkling bright
It's an s-t-a-r, star
(chorus)
It's in the middle of your face, helps you sniff around the place
It's your n-o-s-e, nose
They're attached to you feet, help you walk down the street
They're your t-o-e-s, toes
It's got frosting sweet, on your birthday you eat
A piece of c-a-k-e, cake
It's a pond where you swim, you can dive right in
It's an l-a-k-e, lake
(chorus)
(return to top of page)
